GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Princely Umanmielen's return to the Swamp ended with a police escort . Umanmielen, who spent three years at Florida before transferring to Ole Miss, left the stadium with a number of officers surrounding him. And the defensive end still tried to get at heckling fans. It started when Umanmielen left the sideline in the waning seconds of a 24-17 loss to the Gators . He was walking toward the visiting locker room when at least one fan yelled at him from the stands. Umanmielen clearly didn't like what he heard and made his way toward the seats. Officers quickly stepped in and escorted Umanmielen back toward the locker room. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. It was the latest bit of oddness for Umanmielen, who wore an orange Gators ski mask through Ole Miss' practice facility late in the week. He finished the game with seven tackles, including a sack. In an at-times blistering decision that was filed on Saturday, commissioner Edmund J. Gorman Jr. found that the father and son, who currently leads Fox News parent company Fox Corp and News Corp, had acted in “bad faith” in their attempts to modify the irrevocable trust, the New York Times reported . As it is currently written, the family trust would divide control of the powerful right-wing media empire – which also includes the New York Post , Wall Street Journal and several other British and Australian newspapers – between Murdoch’s four eldest children following the 93-year-old mogul’s death. Gorman contended in his ruling that the proposal to revise the trust amounted to little more than a “carefully crafted charade” to “permanently cement Lachlan Murdoch’s executive roles” within the Murdoch empire, and did not take into account the “impacts such control would have over the companies or the beneficiaries” of the family trust. Adam Streisand, a lawyer for Rupert Murdoch, told the Times that they were disappointed in the ruling and intended to file an appeal. With the trust remaining unchanged, it sets up a possible scenario in which the other three heirs – James, Elisabeth and Prudence – could potentially out-vote Lachlan for control of the sprawling media conglomerate, even though Lachlan currently runs both Fox and News Corp. While Prudence has been the least involved in the family business, Rupert has at various times considered choosing Lachlan, James or Elisabeth to succeed him. Within the past few years and with James and Elisabeth known to hold more politically moderate views than their dad and older brother, Rupert sought to lock in the right-wing slant of Fox News and his other media properties by positioning Lachlan to take charge. The effort to strip the other three children of all voting power while keeping Lachlan entrenched at the top began in earnest in the middle of last year. At that time, according to the court documents, the children had begun discussing the strategy of dealing with their father’s death behind the scenes, spurred on by the episode in the HBO series Succession when fictional family patriarch Logan Roy suddenly passes away. Under the initial trust agreement , which was meant to be binding, the voting shares would be divided equally among the four oldest children after Rupert’s death. This was due to negotiations with Rupert’s second wife Anna – the mother of James, Lachlan and Elisabeth – who was concerned that her ex-husband’s younger children with his third wife, Wendi Deng, would receive equal voting power. Prudence is Murdoch’s first child with his first wife, Patricia Booker . With a provision in the trust giving Rupert the right to make changes as long as he is acting in all beneficiaries’ best interests, Lachlan and his father looked at a way of amending the arrangement to consolidate Lachlan’s power. It also sought to marginalize James, who they were worried was planning a “coup” with Elisabeth and Prudence to push out Lachlan after their father’s death. Ultimately, Gorman sided overwhelmingly against Rupert and his eldest son, claiming they operated secretly for months and had the ulterior motive of keeping Lachlan in power to keep Fox as a right-wing operation. “The effort was an attempt to stack the deck in Lachlan Murdoch’s favor after Rupert Murdoch’s passing so that his succession would be immutable,” Gorman wrote. “The play might have worked; but an evidentiary hearing, like a showdown in a game of poker, is where gamesmanship collides with the facts and at its conclusion, all the bluffs are called and the cards lie face up,” he added.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina Sen. Kay Patterson, who rose from cleaning offices at the segregated Statehouse to serving as a state legislator for over 30 years died Friday. He was 93. The South Carolina Democratic Party announced Patterson's death saying he “left an indelible mark on our state. Senator Patterson commanded everyone’s attention with his wit and wisdom.” The statement did not list a cause of death. Patterson was born in 1931 in Darlington County and raised by his grandmothers. They recalled his hardheaded spirit early, recommending he not take jobs as a golf caddy or shoe shiner because he was likely to mouth off to white people in segregated 1940s South Carolina and get in trouble. Instead, Patterson served in the military and then got his teaching degree through the GI Bill at Allen University. While in college, he cleaned offices at the segregated capitol where he and other Black people couldn't be unless they were working. "When I was a janitor, Black people couldn’t go in the Statehouse," Patterson said in a 2004 interview with the University of South Carolina. “And then one day I came back down here as a member of the House and then in '84, I came back sitting in the Senate as a senator. Now that’s a hell of a long way to come.” Patterson spent 30 years in education and was elected to the South Carolina House in 1974 and the Senate 10 years later after U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn urged him to run for the upper chamber seat. In a statement, Clyburn called Patterson “a trusted leader, a tireless champion for civil rights, and a treasured friend. He was a person of strength, determination, wisdom, and a long proponent of removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse dome .” Patterson was also the first Black person to serve on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees since Reconstruction. Patterson was a key member of both the House and Senate, He served on the budget committees in both chambers and was a major voice in support of civil rights, public education and helping poor people. He adamantly demanded the Confederate flag be removed from atop the Statehouse dome and inside the House and Senate chambers long before they were taken down in 2000. The lifelong Democrat said the final years of his political career were the toughest after Republicans took over state government. His seniority no longer mattered and he felt many newer Republicans were religious hypocrites who claimed to help others but only cared for people just like themselves. A few years before he retired from the Statehouse, Patterson said it was important to respect elders and supervisors, but not be afraid to speak up if bothered or something was on one's mind. “That’s just my hallmark ever since I was a little child. It will get you in trouble now, but you can sleep well at night. And learn to treat everybody as human beings with respect,” Patterson said in the interview with the university's Champions of Civil and Human Rights in South Carolina program. “You can sleep real good at night. Right now, I’m 73 years old and sleep like a log when I go to bed because I know I’ve done no wrong to my fellow man,” Patterson said.Frontline workers will be asked to serve stints in Government under a push to make the state work like a “start up”. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden will warn that the Government will fail to deliver if it carries on with business as usual. In a speech in London, he will set out plans for a £100million fund to trial Silicon Valley-style approach to challenges in the public sector. Crack teams will deployed to look at how to drive down use of temporary accommodation in Liverpool and Essex, and improving family support services in Manchester and Sheffield from January. While Mr McFadden will acknowledge "each of these projects is small", he will say "they could rewire the state one test at a time". Tech firm workers will be invited to do a six to twelve-month “tour of duty” in Government to use their skills to help influence reforms. Public service staff like prison governors and social work chiefs will also be invited to take secondments in Whitehall to help ministers deliver Keir Starmer 's plans to change Britain. Mr McFadden will say: "Prison governors, social work heads, directors of children’s services - they are the ones on the ground who can see how things are working, where the obstacles are, and where a policy won’t survive contact with reality. "They have stared the issues and the people that depend on us in the eye, seen how the system has been broken – they have taken the frustrations home with them each week. Now we want them to be part of the solution." It comes after the Prime Minister unveiled six milestones on how voters can hold him to account on key issues like the NHS , crime and education.
