Stakeholders have challenged leadership recruitment processes across Africa, especially on the political front. They have therefore called for more actions in support of initiatives aimed at liberating African minds across all sectors to rise to the challenge of repositioning Africa as a moral and technological superpower in the spirit of the African Renaissance. The call was made yesterday by stakeholders and participants at the 10th edition of the African Roots Renaissance Roundtable (AR3), held at Wigwe University in Isiokpo, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The AR3 was initiated in 2015 by Nollywood legend and university don, Dr. Sam Dede. The roundtable is held annually, exploring various themes in line with its objective to reawaken the African mind and reignite the spirit of African consciousness, especially among young people. Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, at the event, charged African leaders and citizens to go beyond conversations and begin to take Afro-centric actions that would reshape the future of the continent. The conference was themed ‘Globalization, the New World Order and the Hijacked Concept of Africanism’. At the event, which drew participants from the university community and beyond, the Vice-Chancellor said the Roundtable re-echoes the vision of the founder of Wigwe University, the late Dr Herbert Wigwe, ‘to ignite Africa’s potential for prosperity, nurture responsible fearless leaders, and become the leading university in Africa’. The Convener, Dr Dede, said the initiative was inspired by the exigent need to confront dominant negative perceptions about Africa, illuminate young minds with new paradigms of knowledge, and empower them to go beyond boundaries in driving the true African narratives. This, according to him, will help achieve extraordinary feats to project Africa’s preeminent position in world leadership, a position denied for several years by deeply entrenched anti-Africa chronicles. On the theme, Dede said: “The pace of the race towards globalisation and the so-called ‘New World Order’ is extremely confusing and difficult to understand for some of us in Africa and the developing world. “Increasingly, the continent has become a mass of ordinary spectators around a specially designed grand chessboard, manipulated and manoeuvred by ‘forces’, sometimes spiritual, whose perception of us is that of a people with very little or no value whatsoever. And by far, the grand mind game has positioned us to accept and believe the same perception and narrative about ourselves. Given that evolution will always create the need for adaptation, Africa is desperately in a frantic race to adapt to the ‘New World Order’ and globalisation, against our original concepts of traditional or cultural values and philosophies.” In their contributions to the engaging conversation, various speakers, including Mr. Deinbofa Ere, Dr. Tayo Isijola, Dr. Kennedy Modugu, Prof. Kalu Nwosu, Dr. Henry Dienye, Dr. Ikenna Onyeachu, Mr Innocent Ekwulo, Chief Adi Wali, Dr. Gift Worlu, Mr. Emmanuel Ephraim, and Anthonia Tekuru, advocated for a redefinition of the concept of globalization to enable young Africans to locate it within the context of dignifying African values. On Wednesday, CurlManitoba and Curling Canada unveiled its new regional performance hub and development centre at the Heather Curling Club in St. Boniface. With two of the club’s eight shhets dedicated to the initiative, it will serve as the primary training ground for National Team Program (NTP) athletes and NextGen curlers across the province. “It’s such a big step because what we are seeing around the world is certainly a specialization into daily training environments. Our competitors around the world have facilities that they can train at every day, have the right conditions, the technology, the right coaching. In Canada, we don’t really have that,” said Murdoch. The two rinks will resemble the type of quality that is prepared for professional tournaments, while players will have access to the top training equipment, including video analysis, speed traps, smart brooms that provide performance data and championship-calibre rocks. Best of all, the ice is readily available just about whenever they need it. “I think it’s actually a bigger difference maybe than people realize sometimes because the curlers on TV make it look easy,” said former world champion Jill Officer, now serving as the director of high performance with CurlManitoba. “When you come and play in a curling rink that is meeting the needs of the members who play on a regular basis, it’s very different from what we experience at championships.” The hub has been in use since early October, but its unveiling was delayed as more training equipment arrived. So far, players from high-performance teams such as Kerri Einarson, Matt Dunstone, Kaitlyn Lawes, Mike McEwen and Chelsea Carey have taken advantage of the new facility. Dennis Thiessen of the National Wheelchair Curling Program and NextGen teams such as Mackenzie Arbuckle/Aaron Macdonell and Kate Cameron have also used it. “I’d say we’re pleasantly surprised with the athletes and how many are venturing over,” said Craig Baker, executive director for CurlManitoba. “Some are definitely used to using their home clubs, but as we were able to use high-quality ice and use some championship rocks and equipment, they’re liking the environment, they’re liking the access... so it’s being used probably more than we thought it would be used.” Team Jordon McDonald has used the new ice as much as anyone, with the NextGen team training about three times per week. The team has practised at the Assiniboine Curling Club in the past, and although there were no major issues at that facility, they believe their new training ground is right on the button for what they need. “It’s great, honestly,” said Dallas Burgess, who plays third for McDonald. “The feel of this ice is very similar to arena-style ice. So when we go play big events, we already have a bit of a feel of how the ice is. And the availability of it is just so great. We pretty much have free rein on when we want to book ice and come out and train whenever we need to.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Ganderbal, Dec 28: Reviewing snow clearance and restoration of power and water supply across Jammu and Kashmir post snowfall, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday urged swift action to restore essential services. Convening a video conference in Ganderbal with all districts across J&K to review snow clearance operations and restoration of essential services following heavy snowfall in Kashmir, CM Omar directed the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to personally supervise snow clearance operations, emphasising the need to obtain photographic evidence of cleared areas to ensure thorough removal and prevent freezing road condition as temperatures drop. He called for a proactive approach, urging officials to deploy adequate manpower and machinery on the ground. The CM stressed the importance of ensuring 100 percent attendance of doctors and paramedical staff at all district and sub-district hospitals to effectively manage emergencies. During the meeting, the DCs presented updates on snow clearance, restoration of power and water supply and emergency response to deal with inclement weather. The district administrations were instructed to provide two-hourly updates to the CM’s office and the Chief Secretary’s office to keep the government apprised of the situation. The Chief Engineer of Public Health Engineering (PHE) informed the CM that 90 percent of the water supply across Kashmir had been restored, with efforts underway to address the remaining 10 percent. The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu reported that power and water supply in Jammu districts remains unaffected, while the Chief Secretary confirmed steady progress in restoring electricity feeders and assured that district hospitals were functioning smoothly. Special instructions were issued to the DC Budgam to coordinate with airport authorities to assist stranded tourists and to provide transportation if required. The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, assured that a sufficient stock of essential commodities including food and other civil supplies was available in all districts. Commending officials for their efforts, the CM urged them to remain vigilant, proactive, and responsive to the needs of the people during this challenging period. He emphasised the importance of seamless coordination and uninterrupted services to mitigate the impact of the snowfall on the public. The meeting held in Ganderbal was attended in person by Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani, DC Ganderbal Shyambir, ADC Ganderbal, and other senior district officials. The Green Party is set to suffer significant losses in the Irish General Election, with its leader expecting just a handful of parliamentarians to be returned. Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman said the party could not buck the trend in Ireland of junior coalition partners in Fine Gael and Fianna Fail governments losing support in subsequent elections. He said they expected to retain two to three seats out of the 12 they had won in the 2020 election on the back of a worldwide “Green wave”. “Undoubtedly it’s a disappointing result for our party today,” Mr O’Gorman told reporters in Ongar, Dublin. “It’s hard for a smaller party in government, that’s long been the tradition, the history in Ireland. We hoped going into the election to buck that but we haven’t been able to buck that today.” Mr O’Gorman, a candidate in Dublin West, is among the outgoing Green Party TDs in a battle to retain their seats. Culture Minister Catherine Martin, who is fighting to remain a Green Party TD for Dublin Rathdown, said it was a “very tight” race in her four-seat constituency. “We go in (to government) not afraid of that because the issue of the climate and biodiversity crisis is (greater) than our survival,” she said on RTE Radio. “I stand over and am proud of our track record of delivery.” Green candidate in Waterford Marc O Cathasaigh said he would not be “in the shake-up” to retain his seat in that constituency, while junior minister Ossian Smyth looks at risk of losing his seat in Dun Laoghaire. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania is reeling after a little-known, far-right populist secured the first round in the presidential election, beating the incumbent prime minister. Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, will face reformist Elena Lasconi in a Dec. 8. runoff after most local surveys predicted he would win less than 10% of the vote. Georgescu, 62, was ahead after nearly all ballots were counted with around 22.95%. According to local media, Georgescu in the past has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a man who loves his country” and called Ukraine “an invented state.” He has also sparked controversy for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders from the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes. Lasconi, of the progressive Save Romania Union party, or USR, followed with 19.17%. She beat by a slim margin incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, who stood at 19.15%. Lasconi on Monday warned that Romania is now in “a historical confrontation between preserving Romania’s young democracy ... and those who want to return Romania to the Russian sphere of influence.” She added: “Let us be very clear, Calin Georgescu is an open admirer of Vladimir Putin. He is open against NATO and the European Union ... He is for Romania’s isolation, which he calls neutrality ... And without NATO we are at the mercy of Russia.” Georgescu on Monday denied charges of being an extremist as “false, totally fake” and said he is “completely dedicated” to the Romanian people. “We remain directly linked to European values, but we must find our (own) values,” he said. “I’m not an extremist, I’m not a fascist, I’m a Romanian who loves his country.” Many observers have attributed Georgescu’s success to his TikTok account , which has 3.7 million likes and 274,000 followers. He gained huge traction and popularity in recent weeks. It is the first time in Romania’s 35-year post-communist history that the country’s most powerful party, the PSD, doesn't have a candidate in the second round of a presidential race, underscoring voters’ anti-establishment sentiment. Ciolacu's shocking defeat prompted him to submit his resignation as party leader on Monday. After polls closed on Sunday, the Central Election Bureau said 9.4 million people — about 52.5% of eligible voters — had cast ballots. Georgescu won 43.3% of the vote in Romania's large diaspora, while Lasconi got 26.8%. Romania's president serves a five-year term in the European Union and NATO member country and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments. According to his website, Georgescu holds a doctorate in pedology, a branch of soil science, and held positions in Romania’s environment ministry in the 1990s. Between 1999 and 2012, he was a representative for Romania on the national committee of the United Nations Environment Program. His campaign positions included supporting farmers, reducing import dependence and ramping up local energy and food production. Georgescu's rising popularity will be tested when he faces Lasconi, who may attract more moderate voters who initially choose other candidates. Lasconi, a former journalist, told The Associated Press ahead of the vote that she saw corruption as one of Romania's biggest problems and expressed support for increased defense spending and continued aid to Ukraine. If she wins the final vote, she will be the first female president in Romania's history. Romania will also hold parliamentary elections on Dec. 1 that will determine the country’s next government and prime minister.
